Relationship building

Coach Andy Reid had a smile on his face and it had nothing to do with the Eagles 27-17 win over the Bengals.

He wouldn't admit it in his postgame news conference, but you could tell from his expression he was very pleased by what happened on the first play of the game.

The 64-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb to Terrell Owens was all about relationship building. The first step in a kiss-and-make-up scenario. The fact that six points went up on the scoreboard was just a bonus.

"It was great to get those two connected," Reid said after the game.

But the connection did not lead to verbal communication. The quarterback and receiver have made it clear they have nothing to say to one another and that was obvious on Friday night as the two kept their distance. But the results on the field told another story.

They were communicating. They were communicating as football players. Speaking to one another through football instinct. McNabb completed 14 of 23 passes for 256 yards in the first half and five of those balls went to T.O. for 131 yards and the touchdown.

"They will be fine," Reid said. "Sometimes actions speak louder than words."

Especially when those actions are scripted by the coach.

It's great that 5 & 81 hooked up last night. That touchdown pass was a thing of beauty, even though the safety DID blow the coverage.

It doesn't change the fact that I am not now and will never be a T.O. fan. Egotistical blowhards just aren't my thing. If he helps the Eagles win a Super Bowl then God bless him. Eagles fans deserve a parade. But for me, it would be a tarnished victory. Tarnished because I'll have to spend the season rooting for an ass-clown I can't stand. A little ego is one thing, it's perfectly okay to have ego, to be a winner and KNOW that you're a winner. But T.O. goes way beyond ego. The guy is a malignacy on the team with the potential to tear apart everything that the team has spent years building. Don't agree? That's fine, but just remember how eager T.O. was to throw Donovan under the bus. And just look at the once proud San Fran franchise. A laughingstock. And is it a coincidence that the Eagles seemed to have a record number of hold-outs this year?

Before this is over, Andy Reid will wish he had just cut T.O. and been done with it. I hope I'm wrong. I love the Eagles and have been a fan all my life. It makes me a little depressed to think that even if the Birds DO win the Super Bowl, who do you think is going to get the credit? Andy Reid? Donovan McNabb or T.O.? I've always hated teams like the Yankees or the Cowboys that had the bucks to buy themselves championships. When the Eagles signed T.O. I felt a little like someone had just told me that Jeffrey Dahmer had just been hired as the head cook at my kid's scool cafeteria.

I just wish that T.O. would end up on the Cowboys where I could hate him properly. And he would make the games close so I could hate the 'Boys again. It just hasn't been any fun beating them the last few years. And while the 'Boys are at it, maybe they could sign Saddam Hussein as the long snapper and Bin Laden as the holder. Josef Mengele as team doctor.

One can often hear Terrell Owens demanding respect from coaches and peers ,but apparently one thing missing in his upbringing was learning how to give it.There's an old adage that fits here T.O. "you get what you give"
